Journalism Boot Camp
General Information
The five-day KPA Journalism Boot Camp for entry-level editorial staffers, staffers-to-be or free-lancers will be held July 7-11 in Frankfort.
The cost will be $100 per person. Classes will emphasize writing and reporting skills and will be geared toward people without formal journalism training, who might already work for a newspaper, would like to or want to free-lance.
Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Blazer Library at Kentucky State University. The $100 registration fee does not include meals or lodging. You can download a registration form
The boot camp will be limited to a maximum of 15 participants. The deadline for registration is June 20, unless all 15 slots are filled before then.
Boot campers may commute or stay in a motel, if needed. There are about a dozen hotels and motels in Frankfort – some of which are modestly priced.
Veteran journalists will serve as guest lecturers. Boot campers will also attend a public meeting. There will be writing assignments and a focus on proper newspaper style. Libel law, open meetings and open records laws will also be covered.
David Greer, KPA member services director and a former editor at daily, tri-weekly and weekly newspapers will be the instructor.
There will be a get-acquainted dinner for boot campers on Sunday, July 6 and a farewell luncheon at noon on July 11. Boot campers will be our guests for both meals. Otherwise, boot campers will be on their own for meals.
