Journalism Boot Camp
General Information
The five-day KPA Journalism Boot Camp for entry-level editorial staffers, staffers-to-be or free-lancers will be held July 6-10 in Frankfort.
Classes emphasize writing and reporting skills and are geared toward people without formal journalism training, who might already work for a newspaper, would like to or want to free-lance.
Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Blazer Library at Kentucky State University. You can download a registration form from this web site.
The boot camp will be limited to a maximum of 15 participants. The deadline for registration is June 26, unless all 15 class seats are filled before then.
Boot campers may commute or stay in a motel, if needed. There are about a dozen hotels and motels in Frankfort - some of which are modestly priced. The registration fee does not include lodging or food.
David Greer, KPA member services director and a former editor at daily, tri-weekly and weekly newspapers will be the instructor. Veteran journalists will serve as guest lecturers. Boot campers will also attend a public meeting. There will be writing assignments and a focus on proper newspaper style. Libel law, open meetings and open records laws will also be covered.
There will be a get-acquainted dinner for boot campers on Sunday, July 5, and a farewell luncheon at noon on July 10. Boot campers will be our guests for both meals. Otherwise, boot campers will be on their own for meals.
Boot camp registration is $179. However, discounts are given to those who register early. If you register by June 1, the cost is just $100. Register by June 19 and the cost is $139. Registrations received between June 20 and June 26 are $179. Registration is contingent on seat availability. No refunds can be given after June 26.
