In 2001, the KPA Board of Directors authorized a Fall Chapter Series.
The series was so successful, it has been repeated at least annually. Beginning
in 2005, the series has featured two miniature dachshunds, Woody and Chloe.
These are the pets of Ron and Leigh Anne Florence of Shepherdsville, KY.
Leigh Anne is the author and writes the chapter series mostly as Woody
would tell it. Chloe does participate with her own thoughts in some chapters.
The 2010 Fall Chapter Series is the 10th annual for KPA, and it will be
the sixth featuring Woody and Chloe. The series has already proved its
success, having been awarded Grand Prize by the World Association of Newspapers;
and various top honors and other awards from the Southern Newspaper Publishers
Association, and the Newspaper Association of America.
The program is funded by eon.us, owners of Kentucky Utilities/Louisville Gas and Electric, sponsoring teachers workshops (a representative of the utility company attends every teacher workshop) around the state on how to use newspapers in the classroom, making scrapbooks available to all students participating in the classroom project; the Lexington Herald-Leader makes Kriss Johnson, the NIE manager and a KPA Past president, available to conduct the workshops, pays for the CDs containing the stories, artwork and sponsor logos, editing the stories, writing the Teacher's Activities Guide; the Secretary of State sponsors the podcast of each story; and the Kentucky Press Association is charged with promoting each Fall Chapter Series to its members across the Commonwealth.
