Compelling story. Lots of good detail. Writer paints a picture of gathering while at the same time readers learn more about Meredith.

Heartwarming story that keeps us reading. Nice job.

This story not only chronicles the challenges ad journal of Dennis Graham but sheds light on how services like MedTrans helps him and his family.

Excellent local focus. Willing to take well thought out stands on issues of local importance, something difficult to do at weekly, community newspapers. Well-written, clear and concise.

Yeager’s focus on local sports issues and events was refreshing. He expresses opinions and backs them up, taking full advantage of the freedom this format affords.

Quirky and creative, a surprising read. You might not know where he’s going but you’re rewarded when he gets you there.


Category 7 - Best Sports Story

First Place - Anderson News, John Herndon
Interesting, historical reflection on the coach who originally played a key role in the basketball program at UK and EKU. Pegged the first round NCAA matchups between the two schools. Loaded with historic references.

Second Place - Woodford Sun, Forrest Rutherford
Anticipating a good showing by the Woodford County High School wrestling team in the state championship, the reporter does a nice job of putting the reader at the meet with them.

Third Place - Grant County News, Wayne Yeager
The reporter/photographer captured a touching moment in the life of an injured high school football player. I’m sure it made every mother and father who read it want to cry.


Category 8 - Best Sports Feature Story

First Place - Anderson News, John Herndon
Nice lead, interesting human interest story. Nice way to break up the news on the sports page.

Second Place - Jessamine Journal, Josh Thomas
Good human interest story highlighting a little-known health risk. Breakout box and CSH a nice touch, but should be flush with columns.

Nicely written, well laid out feature. Breakout box a plus.

Impressive analysis and history of African-American experience in Northern Kentucky with statistics and interviews.

Second Place - Oldham Era, Nathaniel Kissel
A reminder to Kentuckians that one of the great movie pioneers, some consider him the greatest, was born and buried in Kentucky; plus a look at his conflicted life and legacy.

Third Place - Corbin/Whitley News Journal, Trent Knuckles
Revealing article on delinquent taxpayers with bold emphasis on those in the Corbin area.

Honorable Mention - Jessamine Journal, Zoya Tereshkova
Good analysis of school problems, a subject of interest to nearly all.


Category 10 - Best Investigative Story or Series

First Place - Benton Tribune-Courier, Tabitha Armstrong
Meth series, solid investigative series that explored all aspects of meth problem, crime, societal rehab, effects on children. Well done. Easily the best in this category .

Second Place - Casey County News, Donna Carman, Brittany Johnson
Ag Development Council series presented a good look at one county’s efforts to shift from tobacco to other farm products and at the attendant problems. Good job.

Third Place - Campbell County Recorder, Liz Carey
“Sex Club” I bet this one was the talk of the town when it was published. Good reporting and excellent use of public records.

Honorable Mention - Oldham Era, Jacquelyn Stoess
Anyone who has wheeled a shopping cart through the store in August will appreciate this one.

Honorable Mention - Oldham Era, Nathaniel Kissel
Interesting look at D.W. Griffith. Kissell turned what could have been average story into a history lesson.


Category 11 - Best On-Going/Extended Coverage Story

First Place - Grant County News, Jamie Baker-Nantz
Great coverage of an issue from multiple angles. While the embezzlement charges started the ball rolling, the paper does an excellent job of showing the cause and effect of the fiscal problems at the 911 Center.

Second Place - Corbin/Whitley News Journal, Trent Knuckles
The story doesn’t end with the dog attacks. The community perspective takes it to a new level. The paper does a good job of staying with it.

Third Place - Cynthiana Democrat, Becky Barnes
The “Can-Man” is obviously not an important influential man in the community, but he’s obviously a beloved character. Good job sticking with him and following up on what could have been a simple “Man hit by car” story.


Category 12 - Best Business/Agribusiness Story

First Place - Harrodsburg Herald, Debbie Jenkins Cook
Business articles are tough to get and tough to write. These were a lot of good ones, and a number were about the tobacco buyout. This one was probably the one with the most reactions and explanation of impact.

Second Place - Mt. Sterling Advocate, Tom Marshall
Being enterprising and original helps make business articles stand out and one about the danger of coyotes to Kentucky agriculture fills the bill.

Third Place - Corbin/Whitley News Journal, Trent Knuckles
A good job of getting background and reminiscences about a rare landmark business closing down.

Effective use of labels, headlines, subheads, captions, etc., elevates theses sports pages above most others in this category . Heavy emphasis on local serves their market well.

Nice variety of topics for small town. I especially liked “Faces of Faith” with focus on richness of religion diversity with photos nicely underscoring this.

Second Place - Oldham Era, Julie Satterly
“Day of Firsts” won me over. The photos and text take one back to that window’s frightening first day of school. “I’m a survivor” was sensitive treatment of Relay for Life, an event that can be humdrum in a small town.

Third Place - Boone County Recorder, Bret Whitacre
Nicely laid out, practical travel piece. Also good piece on premise of library.

All entries had strong points, especially graphics. News-Journal gets an edge with clear and compelling pictorial on election results, votes percentage and photos and imaginative year-end review.

Page on results and effects of alcohol sales vote demonstrated research as well as graphic presentation. Photos a bit large and as with other entries, too many jumps from page one.

Too impressive to overlook, generally neat with outstanding photos.
