A Real World Experience
KPA shows students what their careers are all about
The KPA sponsored Nicole Garland as an intern for Kentucky Utilities for the past 10 weeks to give her a real-world look at the field of public relations.
“I didn’t know what to expect, working in corporate communications,” said Garland. “I had the opportunity to write press releases, organize events and support community involvement activities. I was shown the wide reach of what public relations can entail.”
Garland was also given the opportunity to produce news articles for the company’s intranet and weekly publication, work that she could include in her senior portfolio.
“I was excited to see my work used by the company but what I value most is the knowledge I received from observation,” said Garland who worked daily with KU’s media relations manager, Cliff Feltham.
Garland expressed what she took to heart most was the importance of a good demeanor, being prepared, timeliness and most importantly adaptability in public relations.
“I learned from my boss in a way that couldn’t be taught in a classroom,” said Garland. “It is these attributes I will take away with me to assist me in the future with my career.”
