Description:
The Local, a 4,100 circulation weekly newspaper in the
central Kentucky, located midway between Louisville, Kentucky,
and Cincinnati, Ohio, is seeking a reporter/photographer to cover
a general geographic beat. The Local was named the best mid-sized
weekly newspaper in the state in the Kentucky Press Association’s
Excellence in Kentucky Newspapers Contest 2007.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field
or equivalent experience.
• Competency in all areas of photography. Electronic page
design, InDesign.
• Strong skills with grammar, spelling, writing, interviewing
and researching.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet
frequent deadlines by writing concise stories on deadline.
• Basic computer applications (Word, Excel, Google, web
searches, email, etc)
• Strong initiative in developing story ideas and enterprise.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Cover geographic beat, including courts and police, government,
schools, business, civic groups, community news, meetings, and
business.
• Occasionally cover breaking news in Henry County.
• Regularly shoot photos, primarily digital.
• Participate in electronic layout as directed, including
writing headlines and cutlines.
• Develop story ideas and work to find investigative angles.
• Be available for night/weekend coverage.
• Cover and write stories on own initiative or as assigned.
Provide interesting content through a variety of news, features,
and profiles.
• Maintain close contact (daily where appropriate) with
agencies and personnel on beat.
• Maintain own future files on meetings, events, courts,
etc. as pertinent to the beat.
• Participate in staff projects and significant reporting
efforts.
• Maintain an excellent record of accuracy, responsiveness
and integrity.
• Regular involvement with content and features with The
Local’s website at hclocal.com.
• Assist in proofing news pages.
WORK SCHEDULE: Minimum of 40 hours per week, with some evening
and weekend work required.
