Frankfort is a fast-paced news town rich with local stories. As the seat of state government, there are never a shortage of opportunities to dig into how the three branches impact our readers’ lives. The general assignment reporter with The State Journal must be a hungry, versatile and driven team member who is prolific in print, but always adds value to their work across platforms. The reporter will be able to manage and successfully complete numerous assignments simultaneously and pivot from one assignment to another with ease.


  • Some experience in a newsroom environment or working for a news organization producing stories on deadline is preferred.
  • Some experience with InDesign is preferred.
  • Some digital photography experience is preferred.

Outline of Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Writes compelling, accurate and timely news stories and features for publication in the print and web editions, and special publications of the newspaper.
  • Writes 8-10 news stories weekly.
  • Edits, proofreads and prepares for pagination all individually produced and submitted content as needed with attention to grammar, spelling and AP style.
  • Prepared to take photos to be published in print and to the website along with all stories.
  • Has the ability to use the newspaper’s website and social media accounts in an effective news and information reporting manner, including the use of various media (audio and video) to enhance storytelling.
  • Provides off-cycle updates on the website. Utilizes the State Journal’s social media accounts to both report news and drive readers to web content.
  • Actively participates in the production of Frank. magazine through contribution of stories and other content.
  • Writes columns on a rotation with other staff members for publication on Voices or other pages.
  • Plans and executes enterprise reporting projects that provides customers with unique, in-depth perspectives on issues that impact their lives.
  • Has a strong knowledge of Kentucky’s open record and meeting laws. Consistently applies that knowledge to dig deeper and keep readers informed.
  • Establishes, develops and nurtures productive relationships with a wide range of sources.
  • Shows excellent organization and time management skills. Has the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision. Generates stories across beats without waiting for specific assignments.
  • Shows a willingness to step in to report on breaking and spot news regardless of subject matter.
  • Maintains a regular presence in the physical offices of The State Journal. Remains easily accessible and accountable for time spent working outside the office. Manages a demanding and sometime unpredictable schedule without regularly going into overtime, except in extreme circumstances.
  • Maintains an accessible relationship with readers and other community stakeholders on news and editorial matters.
  • Dresses and conducts self in a professional manner that reflects positively on The State Journal when interacting with the public.
