The Sentinel-News in Shelbyville, Ky., has an opening for a Production Specialist/Community Reporter. The paper is a twice-weekly publication (Wed./Fri.), with a Tuesday TMC product, which also publishes numerous special sections. The job includes pagination of news pages and special sections, compiling of community events and ability to load information onto The Sentinel-News website. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with InDesign and Photoshop and be comfortable with a variety of programs including Microsoft Office. The successful applicant must be a strong writer, have the ability to work in a self-paced atmosphere and as a member of a team and be a stickler for accuracy. Shelbyville is located on I-64, about 25 miles east of Louisville. QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Good organization and time-management skills
  • Extensive knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and InDesign
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Experience with Adobe Illustrator a plus
  • Knowledge of spelling, grammar, AP style and libel law
  • Be able to meet established deadlines of the newspaper
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driverís license
  • Be available for occasional night and weekend duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Compile and organize community events and announcements Ė including weddings, celebrations, engagements, etc.
  • Develop relationships with representatives from area churches, civic clubs, etc. to facilitate a flow of information
  • Process and organize obituaries for print and online
  • Design and lay out pages in The Sentinel-News and Sentinel-News Plus
  • Load stories and photos onto The Sentinel-News website
  • Contribute and help design/paginate special sections
  • Serve as a backup for other members of the news team
  • Take initiative to pursue opportunities
  • Meet established deadlines of the newspaper
  • Function effectively as member of news team
