Description:

This is the second time I am posting this job announcement seeking a reporter and photographer for The Kentucky Standard in Bardstown, Ky., because we are not going to hire just anybody.

If you are not qualified, do not contact me. If you are not willing to work long and irregular hours for modest pay, do not waste my time with an interview (and do yourself a favor, don’t go into journalism). If you are not willing to relocate and live in a small Kentucky town, then do not apply.

But if you have a passion for finding the truth and telling it to others, then I have a rewarding job for you in a great town that has a lot of news going on. If you enjoy finding interesting people in a community and sharing their stories, then we offer that opportunity. We are a tri-weekly newspaper where you will not only write and take photos, but you will also help design pages with Adobe InDesign and proof them before they go to press. You might also have to type an obit or two. We do it all, and we are the best small newsroom in the state of Kentucky. If you want to become a better journalist, then come here and learn how it is done. So if you want to come be a part of this team, then contact me, the editor, Forrest Berkshire.

We cover Bardstown and Nelson County, located about 40 minutes south and east of Louisville, Ky. We cover a county of about 45,000 people. Bardstown is the “Bourbon Capital of the World” and was named “Most Beautiful Small Town in America” in 2012 by USA Today and Rand McNally. It is a unique and interesting town with a lot of rich history and a lot going on.

Job requirements:

  • Ability to take professional photographs (and proof you can do so)
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely in news style (and proof you can do so)
  • Willingness to work hard on deadline in situations that are subject to change on short notice
  • Knowledge and preferably experience working with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Understanding of practical use of social media for communicating to an audience
  • Willingness to take coaching and learn
  • The ability to work well in a team
  • The attitude that no job is beneath you if that is what it takes to put out a newspaper and make deadline
  • Willingness to work some weekends
  • A car that you can use to get to assignments
  • A thick skin
