Editorial manager will supervise and oversee the editorial production, from idea generation to publication. They also edit all content before publication to ensure written materials provide the most impact or views. The candidate will determine, analyze, choose and perform different promotional activities on various marketing platforms. Aside from continuously conducting research on interesting editorial stories using a variety of resources, the editorial manager will also determine new ways of implementing editorial and content methodologies. They apply quantitative techniques and audit the quality and effectiveness of editorial. The candidate will actively participate in community events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Sets editorial policy and guidelines for news content in consultation with publisher
Oversees hiring, dismissal and discipline of newsroom personnel
Oversees and approves layout/design of news, entertainment and sports pages
Coordinates work with other department heads (circulation, advertising, business, production)
Directs special projects
Monitors department expenses and approves all major purchases
Writes or assigns daily editorial for opinion page
Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

The job requires an in-depth knowledge of newspaper operations, including layout, budget and news policy. Also required is the ability to multi-task and to delegate responsibility to others. Leadership ability is essential to the position.


A bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university is required. An alternative would include four to six years of related experience and/or training or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Communication Skills:

The managing editor must communicate effectively both within the newspaper and in the communities we serve. Interaction and communication with other department heads, community leaders and with staff are essential elements of this position. A successful managing editor has the ability to write well and to effectively edit news copy.

Math Skills:

Basic math skills are required to compile and direct the budget of the news operation

Computer Skills:

Basic computer skills for PC, Notes, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Internet, e-mail

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises four department managers and is responsible for interviewing job candidates, hiring and firing; assigns training to proper personnel; completes performance appraisals for department managers; rewards and disciplines managers; addresses complaints and resolves problems.
